Le P. Ferdinand Lugonzo, secrétaire général des évêques dAfrique orientale
AMECEA
La 17e assemblée plénière de lAssociation des membres des conférences épiscopales dAfrique de lEst (Amecea), réunie à Nairobi (Kenya) a élu le P. Ferdinand Lugonzo comme nouveau secrétaire général de cet organisme qui regroupe les évêques des pays dAfrique orientale.
Il succède au P. Pius Rutechura, prêtre du diocèse tanzanien de Bukoba (nord-ouest) qui devient vice-chancelier de lUniversité catholique dAfrique de lEst.
Prêtre du diocèse kényan de Kakamega (ouest), docteur en droit canonique de lUniversité pontificale de la Sainte-Croix, à Rome, le P. Lugonzo travaillait jusquici au secrétariat de la Conférence épiscopale du Kenya comme directeur de lOffice national de droit canonique.
Par ailleurs, Mgr Tarcisio Ziyaye, archevêque de Blantyre (Malawi) a été réélu comme président, charge qui implique aussi le titre de chancelier de lUniversité catholique dAfrique de lEst.
Le secrétariat de l' AMECEA est basé à Nairobi, au Kenya.
La prochaine assemblée plénière de l'AMECEA se tiendra au Malawi en Juillet 2014.
AMECEA: Fr Lugonzo elected new Secretary-General
NAIROBI, July 6, 2011(CISA) -Rev Fr Ferdinand Lugonzo has been elected the new Secretary General of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA). Fr Lugonzo, from the diocese of Kakamega, has been working at the secretariat of the Kenya Episcopal Conference as the director of the national office of the Canon law.
The elections were held at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa at the end of the 17th Plenary Assembly and celebration of the organization's golden jubilee. All the new officials elected will hold office for the next three years and with a possibility of a re-election in the next plenary meeting.
Most Rev Tarcisio Ziyaye Archbishop of Blantyre, Malawi has been retained as the chairman. He is also the Chancellor of Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
The immediate former Secretary General Rev Dr Pius Rutechura, from the Diocese of Bukoba, Tanzania, becomes the new Vice Chancellor of CUEA. CUEA is one of the biggest achievements of AMECEA since its inception in 1961. He replaces Rev Prof John Maviiri from Uganda who has been at the helm for the last nine years. Rev Prof Maviiri had served for three terms of three years each.
Speaking to CISA in a telephone interview Fr Lugonzo thanked the AMECEA bishops for having confidence and trust in him.
"It is a great responsibility bestowed upon me and with a lot of prayers we will hopefully take AMECEA to the next level. I also thank the Kenya Episcopal Conference for the five months that I have worked at their secretariat," he said.
The AMECEA secretariat is based in Nairobi, Kenya.
The next plenary meeting will be held in Malawi in July 2014.
