en EuropeLes animateurs et animatrices Missionnaires d’Afrique délégués d’Europe ont tenu une réunion à La Haye en novembre 2005 (Ndlr - Nous présentons le rapport de la réunion de 2005 avec la photo de la réunion de 2006 qui s’est tenu en septembre à Lublin). Malgré l’impression de ramer à contre courant, les jeunes confrères dans la Société nous demandent de rester une Société internationale et intercontinentale. L’Église d’Europe a aussi besoin de nous pour vivre sa mission universelle. Dynamisés par l’Esprit de la Pentecôte, tant en Afrique qu’auprès des Africains d’Europe, nous sommes missionnaires en collaboration avec l’Eglise locale.Le PÉ n° 969 (2006 / 3) donne l’importance et les contours de notre mission. L’animation missionnaire et vocationnelle (AMV) entre dans le projet apostolique du Conseil des Provinciaux d’Europe (CEP). En janvier 2006, ils ont fait part de leur intérêt particulier pour la Pologne.

Moins d’histoires et plus de témoins
Notre charisme missionnaire est vivant dans nos communautés d’Europe quand elles sont capables d’accueillir. Les jeunes d’aujourd’hui ne demandent pas des ‘histoires missionnaires’, ils veulent rencontrer des ‘témoins’. Ils sont émerveillés de notre ‘être missionnaire’. Si tel confrère semble être triste, les jeunes diront : ‘Il a dû avoir des épreuves dans sa vie. Il est comme nous !’ Si tel autre est rayonnant : ‘Il a dû avoir une vie formidable. On voudrait être comme lui !’ Les jeunes admirent le témoin qui est vrai.
Des personnes entrent en contact avec nous pour trouver leur chemin. En acceptant de ‘moins courir’ et d’être attentifs à la personne présente, l’accueil devient rencontre du Christ dans l’autre. Le dialogue est ouvert. Des orientations de vie sont possibles. Dans la discrétion, pour laisser libre, nous pouvons alors aider à discerner, à faire un pari sur la vie.
Des Églises locales ‘catholiques’
L’intérêt pour l’Afrique existe. Nous facilitons des découvertes, chaque pays à sa manière et selon ses possibilités : pèlerinages (Pologne, Suisse, France), voyages d’insertion (Afrique-Jeunes), camps (Espagne), photothèque (Belgique), activités dans les écoles (Grande-Bretagne), site internet (Pays-Bas). L’internet est un moyen puissant pour entrer en contact et faire passer notre message missionnaire. Des jeunes demandent des infos. Les neuf Provinces soulignent leur engagement dans les structures de leur Église locale. Mais le monde change si vite qu’il nous faut réajuster régulièrement.
La réunion AMV 2006 s’est tenue en Pologne. Ci-dessus, Pawel, nouveau candidat, Celina, SB, Jacek, PB, et Tomek, nouveau candidat.
Le défi de nous ouvrir aux jeunes et aux migrants commence à être relevé. Il s’agit d’une mission de fraternité. Il faut témoigner qu’on peut rencontrer l’autre à égalité. L’étranger en Europe nous ouvre à la catholicité de l’Église. Une Église nouvelle est en train de naître en Europe. Avec le Christ au centre de notre animation missionnaire, notre témoignage est annonce d’Évangile. Quand dans notre Église on oppose tradition et modernité, notre attitude ‘tout à tous’ modère les extrêmes vers l’unité. Là où sont les gens, là est l’Église. La mission ad Gentes, ad extra est parmi nous, en Europe, aujourd’hui.
La jeunesse sera attirée par le Christ qui vit en nous. Notre accueil devient terreau de vocations. Mission et vocation coïncident. Sortir de soi, suivre le Christ, c’est être missionnaire dans une Église vivante.
Impressionnante Pologne
Sans oublier les difficultés réelles de l’animation dans les Provinces fondées de longue date, la Pologne a attiré notre attention. Les Missionnaires d’Afrique sont à Lublin. Là-bas aussi, la situation change très vite sur les plans de la famille, de la sécurité, de la consommation. Il y a l’Église traditionnelle et la ‘moderne’, mais sans milieu. Il s’agit de trouver l’équilibre entre l’Église traditionnelle et celle découverte en Europe et en Afrique. Les pays de l’Est appellent les Polonais mais ceux qui répondent ne sont pas comptés comme missionnaires. L’ouverture doit grandir. Il n’y a pas de formation en théologie missionnaire, pas de structure pour les Fidei donum.
Les jeunes ont un grand désir d’approfondir leur foi. La vie paroissiale, la messe ne leur suffisent plus. Ils demandent des retraites spirituelles. Beaucoup veulent vivre ensemble, en communauté. Certains se tournent vers les pauvres, le travail volontaire. Ils s’engagent. Les voyages de vacances ouvrent vers l’Occident. De plus en plus de laïcs veulent partir comme missionnaires. C’est un défi pour l’Église et pour nous, missionnaires. Il y a une recherche de lieux pour se préparer à partir en Afrique.
La terre est prête pour semer et nous sommes là. Il est temps de passer à l’action. Nous ne pouvons pas répondre à tous les appels. L’absence d’habit religieux pose problème. Il faut s’identifier pour entrer. Les Missionnaires d’Afrique (Pères et Sœurs) sont maintenant connus. Nous faisons un travail de formation des candidats et d’animation. Nous voulons coopérer avec les OPM nationales et diocésaines, avec les enfants et les jeunes pour l’éveil des vocations. Depuis l’ouverture de notre maison, nous collaborons avec le clergé et avec l’université de Lublin.

Photos 2006 réunion
La Pologne est un terrain fertile pour les vocations. Nous avons entendu un appel de l’Esprit et nous avons adressé un message pressant au Conseil Général. L’AMV pense qu’il est urgent d’intensifier notre effort d’animation pour ne pas manquer cette occasion. Nous avons fait des propositions concrètes. Reconnaissons que nous sommes lents à investir.
Les autres nous le disent. N’ayons pas peur d’annoncer qui nous sommes. Notre ‘pudeur’ nous ferait-elle oublier de témoigner ? Après une conférence sur l’assassinat des sept moines de Tibhirine, Algérie, un prêtre du diocèse de Lyon me disait : ‘Les Pères Blancs aussi, vous avez vos martyrs de la même époque que les Trappistes. Pourquoi n’en parlez-vous jamais ?’ En Europe, surtout par l’accueil fraternel, nous avons à témoigner de notre vie missionnaire.

Promotion in Europe
Men and women MAfr European Delegate Promoters held a meeting at The Hague in November 2005. (Ed’s note : We print excerpts from the 2005 meeting with two photos taken in Lublin during the 2006 meeting.) We had the impression of rowing upstream. Nonetheless, we remain convinced that as fully-fledged Missionaries of Africa, young confreres in the Society want to remain international and intercontinental. The Church in Europe needs us to live out its universal mission. Inspired by the Spirit of Pentecost, we remain ‘mandated for mission’ in Africa and towards Africans in Europe, in collaboration with the Local Church. The PE n° 969 (2006 / 3) demonstrates the importance and dimensions of Missionary and Vocation Promotion (MVP) as part of the apostolic project of the Council of European Provincials (CEP). During a meeting in January 2005, they shared on their interest for what is happening in Poland.

Our missionary charism is lived out in our communities in Europe by a capacity for welcome. Each country has its particular situation, but it is a matter of seeing the Church in its global dimension. Young people today are not in search of ‘missionary tales’, they want to meet witnesses and they are amazed by our ‘being missionary’. It comes out like this: such and such a confrere appears sad. The reaction of young people is that he must have gone through trials in his life. ‘That makes him like us!’ If someone else is joyful, young people would say, ‘He must have a great life. We would like to be like him!’ In any case, young people admire the genuineness of our testimony.
People want contact with us to find their way. If we accept to stop running and be more attentive with regard to the person before us, that receptivity becomes a fraternal encounter. Christ is living in the other person and the dialogue is begun. Choices for life become possible. Our experience of Africa helps us to see things from another angle and under a different light. Discreetly, in total respect of inner freedom, we help in discovering, discerning and reflecting on life.
Local Churches become ‘Catholic’
There is interest in Africa. We smooth the progress of discovery, each one according to his possibilities: pilgrimages, (Poland, Switzerland, France), trips for integration, (Africa-Youth), camps (Spain), photo library, (Belgium), activities in schools, (Britain), Internet site, (The Netherlands). Internet is a powerful means for contacting people in their homes with a missionary message. Young people are asking for information. The dialogue has begun.’ The nine Provinces emphasised their commitment to the structures of their Local Churches, but beware! The world changes so quickly that we have to regularly re-adjust.
The MVP Meeting 2006 took place in Poland. Above, Pawel, new candidate, Celina, WS, Jacek, WF, and Tomek, new candidate.The challenge of opening up to young people and migrants is beginning to be accepted. It is a mission of fraternity where the old colonial helmet is definitely out of place! We need to give the example of meeting others on an equal footing. Christ who lives in us also attracts youth. This welcome we give them can be good soil for planting the seeds of a vocation. Mission and vocation coincide. Leaving self and following Christ is to be a missionary in a living Church.
The foreigner in Europe opens us up to the catholicity of the Church. A new Church will arise. We try to put Christ at the centre of our missionary promotion. In a Church that too often sets tradition against modernity, the ‘all things to all men and women’ approach moderates the extremes and enhances unity. Wherever there are people, there is Church. The Mission Ad Gentes, ad extra is clearly among us here in Europe today.
Impressive Poland
Without forgetting the difficulties of promotion in the Provinces of long-standing, Poland attracted our attention. In MVP, Poland was part of the European Union long before 2004. The Missionaries of Africa are in Lublin. There also, the situation is changing very quickly in respect of the family, security and consumerism. There is openness to the outside world and that leads to a need for collaboration. It is about finding a balance between the traditional Church and the one discovered in Europe and Africa. The former Eastern-bloc countries are calling them, but those who respond are not counted as missionaries. There is no training in missionary theology and no structure for Fidei Donum.
Photos 2006 Meeting
Young people have a great desire to deepen their faith. Parish life and going to Mass are no longer enough. They are asking for spiritual retreats. Many are asking to live together, in community. Many are turning towards the poor, in voluntary activities. They are very committed. Their holiday trips open them to the West. Laypeople increasingly want to commit themselves as missionaries. It is a challenge for the Church and consequently for us missionaries. They look for places to prepare themselves to leave for Africa.
The soil is ready for sowing and we are here. It is time to act. We cannot respond to all appeals. The absence of a religious habit poses problems; we need to be known in order to engage in the process. The Missionaries of Africa (Fathers and Sisters) are now known. We are at work in training candidates and in promotion. We want to work with others, the national and diocesan OPM, children, youth, and in vocation awareness. With the opening of our new house, everyone is discovering who we are. We need to collaborate with clergy and the University of Lublin. Relations are cordial.
We realised that Poland is fertile soil for vocations. We have heard the call of the Spirit and we have addressed an urgent appeal to the General Council. The MVP believes it is urgent for us to intensify our efforts in promotion and in making people welcome, so as not to miss out on this opportunity.
We have made practical proposals. We recognise that we are too slow to invest. Let us not be shy to say who we are. Will our modesty make us forget our need to bear witness? Just recently, after a talk on the seven Trappist martyrs of Tibhirine, a priest of Lyons Archdiocese said, ‘You too, you have your martyrs of the same period as theirs, why don’t you ever speak about them?’ By our fraternal ‘all things to all men and women’ welcome, we live our charism fully in our missionary communities in Europe.
