Two Booklets

1 . THE PLIGHT FO THE URBAN POOR AND YET INCREASED RURAL-URBAN MIGRATION. (42 pages with colour charts)

This is a socio-economic analysis in ten informal settlements of Kampala. The survey has established that about 63.5% of the 200 household that were interviewed lived below an estimated poverty line of UShs 399.291 (199 $ or 133 e.) a month for a family of 7, that is 28$ @ month for each person!) This high incidence of poverty was attributed to the high levels of urban unemployment and the fact that the number of slum-dwellers keeps increasing due to rural-urban migration, whereas the supply of goods and services either remains constant or it increases at a lower rate. One of the main consequences of this imbalance is food insecurity. Poor drainage and sewage systems, poor housing and the lack of safe water and good toilets, high crime and unemployment and inflation rates continue to frustrate the slum-dwellers of Kampala. Thus, the need to upgrade the slums of Kampala is both urgent and crucial.

With this research, JPIIJPC intends to share these facts with the slum dwellers to empower them in doing what they can to improve their situation and to claim from their socio-political leaders better policies.

JPIIJPC will also carry out advocacy work with the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and City Council to influence their policies in favor of the families in the slums.

This booklet is sold for 5.000 Ug.sh. ( 3 $ ) each ). Payment can be done through M.Afr. channels or directly to the banc account.

It is available at the Centre. Those interested can inform us by e.mail: jp2justice.director@sat.signis.net and we shall arrange to send the booklet by post or other means.

2 . The second booklet: RELEVANCE OF THE SECOND AFRICAN SYNOD TO UGANDA. (45 pages)

This is a simplified Working Document of the second African Synod contextualized to Uganda’s situation. The Foreword is written by Cardinal Emm. Wamala, Patron of JPIIJPC

The purpose of this summary is to contextualize the Instrumentum Laboris to Uganda’s situation and to provide a practical and pastoral text which can be used by both individuals and communities to study, reflect upon, and internalize the message and issues of this African Synod. The ultimate objective of this summary, therefore, is to bring the Second African Synod to the consciousness of Catholics in Uganda so as to enhance a new strategy of evangelization characterized by reconciliation, justice and peace.

In every chapter, we present first a summary of the I.L given in italics followed by a reflection on its relevance to Uganda’s situation. Finally, a set of questions is presented to encourage further reflection, meditation and commitment by both individuals and communities.

Both publications are being very much appreciated.

This booklet also sells for 5000 Ug.sh ( 3 $) each. and is available at the Cetnre.
