Bonjour et bonne Année! Nous célébrons aujourd'hui le premier jour de l'an 2000
Ci-dessous, un petit texte sur la prière de ce matin.

Il ne fait pas encore jour quand nous entrons dans l'église Saint Yared qui
est située tout près du Centre des Salésiens. Dans le choeur, une trentaine
de chantres a déjà entonne les chants des laudes et petit a petit les gens
arrivent. A droite les femmes drapées de blanc, a gauche les hommes qui
portent aussi un vêtement blanc en ce jour de grande fête.

Au fond dans le sanctuaire, autour de l'autel, on devine des prêtres qui
préparent la liturgie de la bénédiction de la nouvelle année. Celle-ci
débute avec un encensement général, suivi par de nombreuses prières chantées
qui préparent la grande prière du Notre Père. La Vierge Marie a une grande
place dans toutes ces prières. Le livre de la Vierge nous est présente pour
être vénère. La première partie de la liturgie se termine avec la vénération
de la croix que le célébrant offre au front et aux lèvres de tous les
participants; a l'intérieur et a l'extérieur de l'église.

La deuxième partie de la cérémonie est precedee de chants. Puis un diacre
théologien prend le micro et dans une longue homélie, relate l'histoire du
culte et de la liturgie éthiopienne depuis le 3eme siècle. Il explique en
Amharic, l'origine et les dates des différentes fêtes religieuses qui
rythment l'année liturgique. Assis entre José Bandres et Emmanuel Fritz
(Spiritain), je peux suivre le déroulement du calendrier liturgique que le
diacre dévoile sans note! Puis un prêtre s'avance pour bénir l'encens.

La cérémonie a dure deux heures et quart. L'atmosphère dans l'église est
recueillie mais pas formelle. Certaines personnes lisent dans leur missel,
d'autres s'agenouillent et s'inclinent. La musique est orientale mais de
temps en temps, le rythme s'accélère et la foule, encourage par les
chantres, accompagne des mains les chants. Nous sommes bien en Afrique.

Good morning and Happy New Year! We celebrate today the first New Year's Day 2000
Below, a small text on the prayer of this morning.

It was not yet light when we entered the church of Saint Yared, situated very close to the Salesian Centre. In the choir, thirty or so cantors had already begun to intone the chants of Lauds and little by little the people arrived. The women, dressed in white, were on the left and the men on the right also wore white clothing on this major feast day.

Down at the sanctuary, we could make out the priests around the altar preparing the liturgy for the Blessing of the New Year. This begins with a general incensing, followed by many chanted prayers preparing the great prayer of the Our Father. The Virgin Mary has a major place in all these prayers. The Book of the Virgin was presented to us for veneration. The first part of the liturgy concluded with the Veneration of the Cross, which the celebrant offered to the forehead and lips of all those taking part, inside and outside the church.

The second part of the ceremony was preceded by chants. Then a deacon theologian took the microphone and in a long homily, related the history of worship and the Ethiopian liturgy since the third century. In Amharic, he explained the origin and dates of different religious celebrations which punctuate the liturgical year. Seated between José Bandres and Emmanuel Fritz (Spiritan), I was able to follow the unfolding of the liturgical calendar that the deacon revealed without notes! Then a priest came forward to bless the incense.

The ceremony lasted two and a quarter hours. The atmosphere in the church was meditative without formality. Some people were reading from their missals, others were kneeling or bowing. The music was Oriental Rite, but from time to time, the rhythm accelerated and the congregation, encouraged by the cantors, clapped in time to the chants. We were truly in Africa.
