Le Card. Rodé ouvre la 35e Congrégation générale de la Compagnie de Jésus : « Maintenez et développez votre charisme, jusqu’à être et à apparaître aux yeux du monde comme des contemplatifs dans l’action »

Rome (Agence Fides) - La 35e Congrégation générale de la Compagnie de Jésus s’est ouverte ce matin, 7 janvier, par une messe solennelle dans l’Eglise du Jésus à Rome, présidée par le Cardinal Franc Rodé, Préfet de la Congrégation pour les instituts de vie consacrée et les sociétés de vie apostolique. Les 225 membres de la Congrégation, provenant du monde entier, sont appelés à élire le nouveau Supérieur général (Préposé général) et à discuter les défis apostoliques qui attendent la Compagnie. A la fin de la messe, les reliques de Saint Ignace de Loyola, conservées dans l’Eglise, ont été vénérées, et on a allumé le cierge qui brûlera pendant toute la période de la congrégation. D’autres cierges seront allumés dans les églises des Jésuites dans le monde entier, comme témoignage d’une prière continue pour le succès de la congrégation. La première phase de la congrégation (dix jours environ) sera privée. Après l’élection du nouveau Supérieur général, commencera la seconde phase.

« C’est la seconde fois dans l’histoire de la Compagnie que se réunit une Congrégation générale pour élire un nouveau Préposé général, du vivant de son prédécesseur - a rappelé dans son homélie le Card. Rodé. Cette congrégation se réunit aussi pour traiter des sujets importants et difficiles concernant l’ensemble de la Compagnie, et de la façon dont elle avance actuellement. Vous vous interrogerez certainement sur l’identité du Jésuite aujourd’hui, sur la signification et la valeur du vœu d’obéissance au Saint-Père qui depuis toujours qualifie votre famille religieuse, sur la mission de la Compagnie dans le contexte de la mondialisation et de la marginalisation, sur la vie communautaire, l’obéissance apostolique, la pastorale des vocations, et d’autres thèmes importants ».

Le Card. Rodé a ensuite souligné : « dans votre charisme et dans votre histoire vous pourrez trouver des points de repères efficaces pour éclairer les choix que la Compagnie doit accomplir aujourd’hui… Votre travail doit être éminemment apostolique, avec une ampleur universelle, humaine, ecclésiale, évangélique. Il doit être toujours accompli à la lumière de votre charisme, de sorte que la participation croissante des laïcs à vos activités n’obscurcisse pas votre identité, mais au contraire l’enrichisse de la collaboration de ceux qui, issus d’autres cultures, partagent votre esprit et vos objectifs. Maintenez et développez votre charisme, face aux besoins apostoliques urgents, jusqu’à être et à apparaître aux yeux du monde comme des « contemplatifs dans l’action », qui communiquent aux hommes et à la création l’amour reçu de Dieu et les orientent de nouveau vers l’amour de Dieu. Tous comprennent le langage de l’amour ».

Cardinal Rodè opens 35th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus: “maintain and develop your charisma, in order to be and to show yourselves to the world as contemplatives in action ”

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - This morning, Monday 7 January, a solemn concelebration of the Eucharist in the Church of Gesù in Rome, presided by Cardinal Franc Rodé, Prefect of the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, marked the opening of the 35th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus. A total 225 members of the congregation coming from all over the world will elect a new Superior General (Preposito General) and discuss apostolic challenges facing the Society. At the end of the Mass there was an act of veneration of the earthly remains of St Ignatius of Loyola, preserved in the church of Gesu, with the lighting of a lamp which will burn for the entire duration of the congregation. Similar lamps will be lit in Jesuit churches all over the world as symbols of communion in prayer. The first stage of the congregation (about 10 days) will be private. The election of the new Superior General will mark the beginning of the second stage.

“This is the second time in its history that our Society gathers for a General Congregation to elect a new Preposito General, while his predecessor is still alive -Cardinal Rodè said in his homily -. This congregation is also meeting to treat important and difficult matters concerning the Society, as well as the way in which it proceeds. You will certainly discuss the identity of the Jesuit today, the significance and value of the vow of obedience to the Holy Father which has always distinguished your religious Family, the mission of the Society on the context of evangelisation, marginalisation, community life, apostolic obedience, vocations pastoral and other important themes.”

Cardinal Rodè continued: “in your charisma and your traditions you will find effective points of reference to illuminate the decisions facing the Society today… your activity must be eminently apostolic, of universal, human, ecclesial and evangelical scope. It must always be undertaken in the light of your charisma, so that growing participation of lay people in your activity rather than obscure your identity, on the contrary enriches it with the collaboration of people from many different cultures who share your life style and objectives. Maintain and develop, despite urgent apostolic necessities, your charisma, in order to be and to show yourselves to the world, as «contemplatives in action», who communicate to all men and women and to creation love received from God and lead them to the love of God. Everyone understands the language of love.”
