AFRIQUE/ETHIOPIE - Le Congrès eucharistique national de l'Eglise éthiopienne se termine, un évènement qui rentre dans le cadre du Grand jubilé de l'Ethiopie

Addis Abeba (Agence Fides)- Dimanche 4 mai se termine le Congrès eucharistique national de l'Eglise éthiopienne. L'évènement rentre dans le cadre des célébrations du Grand jubilé et du Nouveau millénium chrétien éthiopien, commencés en septembre 2007 (cf Fides 3/9/2007).

La clôture du Congrès eucharistique de l'Ethiopie sera célébrée par une messe dans l'église paroissiale des Salésiens “Mary Help of Christians”, dans le quartier Mekanissa de la capitale, Addis Abeba. La cérémonie liturgique, en rite oriental et en langue amharique, sera présidée par Son Exc. Mgr Berhaneyesus D. Souraphiel, Archevêque d'Addis Abeba et Président de l'Assemblée dfes évêques d'Ethiopie. L'envoyé spécial du Saint-Père Benoît XVI, Son Eminence le Card. Ivan Dias, Préfet de la Congrégation pour l'Evangélisation des peuples, prononcera l'homélie en anglais, avec une traduction en amharique.

Le Grand jubilé et le Nouveau millénaire chrétien éthiopien ont lieu de septembre 2007 à septembre 2008 selon la datation du calendrier éthiopien basé sur les calculs des anciens calendriers copte, hébreux, julien et de l'astronomie égyptienne. Parmi les activités organisées par l'Eglise catholique à l'occasion de l'évènement, il y a le Symposium national, la publication de la Bible en amharique, l'organisation de pèlerinages. Au Symposium national, l'Eglise éthiopienne toute entière discute des problématiques et des perspectives de la communauté catholique locale, des activités de développement et de la contribution des catholiques à la vie nationale. Il s'agit donc d'un forum pour constater les progrès effectués par l'Eglise dans le domaine de l'évangélisation et de la promotion humaine.

Pour céléber le Jubilé, les évêques ont encouragé la diffusion d'une série de publications spéciales adressées à la communauté locale et à celle universelle. Parmi celles-ci il y a une revue “The Living Hope”, qui sort en 4 numéros pendant l'Année jubilaire. Une autre importante initiative est l'impression et la distribution de la Bible en langue amharique dans la traduction de 1954. Des pèlerinages en Ethiopie et à l'étranger ont d'autre part été organisés, au niveau national ou diocésain, dont un à Jérusalem.(L.M.) (Agence Fides 2/5/2008 lignes 24 mots 328)

AFRICA/ETHIOPIA - Close of the National Eucharistic Congress of the Church in Ethiopia, part of the Great Jubilee of Ethiopia

Addis Ababa (Agenzia Fides) - On Sunday, May 4, the National Congress of the Church in Ethiopia will come to a close. The event is situated within the celebrations being held for the Great Jubilee and the new Christian Millenium of Ethiopia, begun in September 2007 (see Fides 13/9/2007).

The close of the Eucharistic Congress in Ethiopia will be celebrated with a Mass in the Salesian Parish of Mary, Help of Christians, in a part of the capital city named Mecaniza. The liturgy, which will be held in the Eastern Rite and in the Amharic language, will be presided by Archbishop Berhaneyesus D. Souraphiel of Addis Ababa, President of the Ethiopian Bishops’ Conference. The Holy Father’s Special Envoy, Cardinal Ivan Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, will give the homily in English, accompanied by an Amharic translation.

The Great Jubilee and the new Christian Millenium of Ethiopia is being celebrated from September 2007 to September 2008, following the Ethiopian calendar that is based on calculations gathered from ancient Coptic, Hebrew, Julian, and Egyptian astronomical calendars. Among the activities being organized by the Catholic Church for this event, is the National Symposium, the publication of the Bible in Amharic, and the planning of pilgrimages. In the National Symposium, the entire Ethiopian Church will discuss the difficulties and perspectives for the local Catholic community, the developmental activities, and the contribution of Catholics to the life of the nation. Thus, it is a forum intended to confirm the progress being made by the Church in the area of evangelization and in favor of the human person.

In honor of this Jubilee celebration, the Bishops have promoted the distribution of a series of publications for the local community and the universal Church. Among them, is a magazine entitled “The Living Hope,” that will be published in 4 issues during the Jubilee Year. Another important initiative is the printing and distribution of the Bible in Amharic, with the 1954 translation. There have also been several pilgrimages organized on a national and diocesan level, to sites in Ethiopia and other countries, including a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
