AFRIQUE/RD CONGO - Nouvelles attaques de la LRA dans le nord-est du Congo - l'Evêque de Bondo remercie « ceux qui continuent à parler de ce drame »

Kinshasa (Agence Fides) - Dans la nuit du 18 au 19 mai, un groupe de guérilleros de l'Armée de Résistance du Seigneur (LRA) a enlevé de 15 à 18 personnes dans un village sis à 7 Km d'Ango dans le nord-est de la République démocratique du Congo (RDC). C'est ce qu'affirme S.Exc. Mgr Etienne Ung'Eyowun, Evêque de Bondo dans un bref communiqué publié sur le site Internet de la Conférence épiscopale congolaise. « Le lendemain, les hommes de la LRA ont attaqué un village à 30 Km du précédent » explique à l'Agence Fides Mgr Ung'Eyowun.

La LRA est un groupe de guérilla né dans la seconde moitié des années 80 du siècle dernier dans le nord de l'Ouganda, groupe qui, depuis quelques années, a déplacé ses actions dans le nord-est de la République démocratique du Congo, dans le sud-est de la République centrafricaine et au Sud Soudan. Selon le Bureau de l'ONU pour la Coordination des Affaires humanitaires (OCHA), dans la seule partie nord-orientale de la RDC, se trouvent environ 300.000 évacués suite aux violences de la LRA.

« Les conditions d'insécurité dérivent du fait que sont présents peu de militaires de l'armée régulière, par ailleurs mal armés et mal équipés alors que les forces de l'ONU, déployées dans d'autres régions de la RDC, sont absentes de la zone. La population a donc peur et se regroupe dans les centres les plus importants, abandonnant les villages les plus exposés aux incursions de la LRA » explique à Fides Mgr Ung'Eyowun.

« Les personnes évacuées sont assistées par l'Eglise et par une dizaine d'organisations humanitaires qui sont présentes à Ango et dans deux autres localités, distribuant des vivres à la population » déclare l'Evêque de Bondo.

Voici un an, le 24 mai 2010, le Président américain Barack Obama promulguait le LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act, disposition législative obligeant les Etats-Unis à aider les populations de l'Afrique centrale touchées par les violences de la LRA.

« Je remercie ceux qui continuent à parler du drame provoqué par la LRA. Il faut que cette loi soit appliquée dans toute son ampleur afin de mettre fin aux souffrances de la population » conclut Mgr Ung'Eyowun. (L.M.) (Agence Fides 24/05/2011)

AFRICA/DR CONGO-New LRA attacks in northeastern Congo, the Bishop of Bondo thanked "those who keep talking about this tragedy"

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - In the night between 18 and 19 May a group of guerrillas of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) kidnapped 15 to 18 people in a village 7 km from Angola in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This is what the Archbishop Etienne Ung'Eyowun, Bishop of Bondo says in a brief dispatch published on the website of the Episcopal Conference of Congo. "The next day the men of the LRA attacked a village 30 km from the previous one," Mgr.Ung'Eyowun explains to Fides.

The LRA is a guerrilla group born in the mid 80s of last century in northern Uganda, which in recent years has shifted its activities in the north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, south-east of the Central African Republic and in southern Sudan. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, only in the north-eastern DRC, there are about 300,000 internally displaced persons caused by the violence of the LRA.

"The conditions of insecurity stem from the fact that there are few regular army troops, poorly armed and poorly equipped, while there are no UN forces present because they are deployed in other regions of the DRC. The population is therefore alarmed and group together in bigger towns, abandoning their villages which are most exposed to the incursions of the LRA, "explains Mgr .Ung'Eyowun to Fides.

"The internally displaced persons are assisted by the Church and a dozen humanitarian organizations, which are present in Angola and in two other locations, and distribute food to the population," says the Bishop of Bondo.

A year ago, on May 24, 2010, Barak Obama, U.S. President promulgated the LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act, which commits the U.S. to help the people of central Africa affected by the violence of the LRA.
"I thank those who continue to talk about the tragedy caused by the LRA. It is necessary that this statute is fully applied in order to end the suffering of the population, "concluded Mgr.Ung'Eyowun. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 05/24/2011)
