AFRIQUE/AFRIQUE DU SUD - Le 12 décembre se dérouleront les funérailles du missionnaire, Père Blanc, tué en Afrique du Sud, et très actif dans les zones les plus désavantagées du pays ; c’est le quatrième prêtre catholique tué cette année en Afrique du Sud

Pretoria (Agence Fides) – Samedi 12 décembre se dérouleront les funérailles du Père Louis Blondel, des missionnaires d’Afrique (Pères Blancs), tué dans la nuit de dimanche 6 à lundi 7 décembre, à Diepsloot, une des township de Pretoria, en Afrique du Sud. La messe de suffrage, en l’Église du Sacré Cœur de Diepsloot, sera présidée parson Exc. Mgr Paul Mandla Khumalo, archevêque de Pretoria.

Deux communiqués envoyés à Fides, un du Supérieur Général des Missionnaires d’Afrique, le Père Gérard Chabanon, l’autre du porte-parole de la Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC), reconstruisent les circonstances du meurtre du missionnaire d’origine française. Dans la nuit du dimanche 6 décembre, trois jeunes ont pénétré, à travers une fenêtre, dans l’habitation des missionnaires à Diepsloot.

Après avoir réveillé un confrère canadien du Père Louis et une autre personne qui dormait dans la maison. Ils se sont dirigés ensuite vers la chambre du Père Louis Blondel, qui a ouvert la porte et qui a été tué aussitôt par un seul coup d’arme à feu.

Le P. Louis Blondel avait 70 ans et il était originaire du nord de la France. Il avait enseigné la philosophie en Tanzanie pendant 15 ans. Depuis 1987, il s’était déplacé en Afrique du Sud. En juin 2009, il avait terminé son second mandat comme supérieur de la Province d’Afrique australe (Malawi, Mozambique et Afrique) des Pères Blancs.

Il a enseigné la philosophie au St. Peter’s Seminary, Hammanskraal. Après avoir fondé “Cordis”, un centre Emmaus, et avoir travaillé au développement d’Orange Farm, un immense township de Johannesburg, en 2008, le Père Blondel s’est transféré à Diepsloot, une autre township d’environ 300 mille personnes qui se trouve entre Johannesburg et Pretoria.

A Diepsloot, le Père Blondel a ouvert une nouvelle paroisse. “Les missionnaires d’Afrique et la communauté chrétienne que Louis a servi, rendent grâce à Dieu pour son engagement évangélique concret, pour ses multiples initiatives et son intelligence créatrice” conclut le communiqué du Père Chabanon.

Cinq personnes suspectées d’être impliquées dans l’homicide du Père Blondel ont été pour le moment arrêtées par la police sud-africaine, selon un communiqué du porte-parole de la SACBC à Fides.

Le Père Blondel est le quatrième prêtre catholique tué en Afrique du Sud en 2009. Les autres prêtres sont : le Père Daniel Matsela Mahula, diocèse de Klerksdorp, tué le 27 février tandis qu’il conduisait sa voiture, par quatre bandits de la route, près de Bloemhof ; le Père Lionel Sham, curé de Mohlakeng (Archidiocèse de Johannesburg), tué le 7 mars 2009, et le Père Ernst Plöchl, missionnaire autrichien de 78 ans de la Congrégation des Missionnaires de Mariannhill, tué le 31 mai dans la Province sud africaine du Cap. The funeral of Fr. Louis Blondel, of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), will be held Saturday, December 12th. Fr. Blondel was killed the night of Sunday, December 6th and Monday 7th in Diepsloot, one of the townships of Pretoria, South Africa. The memorial Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart of Diepsloot, will be presided over by Archbishop Paul Mandla Khumalo of Pretoria.

Two press releases sent to Fides, one by the Superior General of Missionaries of Africa, Fr. Gerard Chabanon, another spokesman for the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference (SACBC), reconstruct the circumstances of the killing of the missionary of French origin. On the night of Sunday, December 6, three young men entered through a window into the missionaries' home in Diepsloot. Having awoken a Canadian religious brother of the community and another person who was sleeping in the house and stealing their mobile phones, they demanded that the main door of the house be opened. Thus, another young man entered, who asked whether there were other people in the house. They then headed towards the room of Fr. Louis Blondel, who opened the door and was immediately killed with one shot of a firearm.

P. Louis Blondel was 70 years and was a native of northern France. He taught philosophy in Tanzania for 15 years. In 1987, he moved to South Africa. In June 2009, he finished his second term as Superior of the Province of Southern Africa (Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa) of the White Fathers. He also taught philosophy at St. Peter's Seminary, Hammanskraal. After founding "Cordis", an Emmaus Center, and having worked in the development of Orange Farm, a huge township in Johannesburg, in 2008 Fr. Blondel had moved to Diepsloot, another township of about 300,000 people that is located between Johannesburg and Pretoria. In Diepsloot, Fr. Blondet had opened a new parish.

"The Missionaries of Africa and the Christian community that Louis has served, give thanks to God for his own concrete commitment to the Gospel, for its many initiatives, and his creative intelligence," the statement by Fr. Chabanon concluded.

Five people are suspected of involvement in the murder of Fr. Blondel and have meanwhile been arrested by South African police, a spokesman of the SACBC tells Fides.

Fr. Blondel is the fourth Catholic priest to be killed in South Africa in 2009. The three other priests are Fr.Daniel Matsela Mahula, in the Diocese of Klerksdorp, killed February 27 while driving his car, by four highwaymen near Bloemhof, Fr. Lionel Sham, parish priest of Mohlakeng (Archdiocese of Johannesburg), killed March 7, 2009, and Fr. Ernst Plöchl, a 78 year old Austrian missionary of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill, killed May 31 in the Cape Province of South Africa. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 9/12/2009)
