WE HAVE ARRIVED…
We are at the start of something new: seven candidates appointed to do our
theology in Jerusalem. By happy coincidence we all happened to book ourselves
on to the same flight for Tel Aviv, arriving on the 22nd August. What a nice
surprise it was to meet one another at Addis Ababa airport, and board the
plane together!

Buholzer and Tom Wijffels were at the airport in Tel Aviv to welcome us:
Jonathan and Victor (from Nigeria), Léonce and Gaëtan (from Burkina
Faso), and Evans, Moses and Bernard (from Zambia). Our faces lit up when we
could at last admire the old city and its environs from the roof top of St
Anne's, our new home: "Wow, here we are, in Jerusalem!"

Next
evening, after a suitable and appreciated day of rest, we were officially
welcomed by the St Anne's community. Pol Vonck and Thomas Maier in
particular gave us a special handshake: they are the two members of the community
appointed as 'formation-helpers'. Both Pol and Thomas also very kindly spent
the next 6 days taking us round Jerusalem, showing us its churches and basilicas,
the Western Wall, the Mount of Olives. They took us through the maze of narrow
little streets that lead through markets and past all kind of vendors, through
city gates and into all kinds of different places … One day we also had
an excursion to Bethlehem.
This week of adapting to our new surroundings was followed by a session on our apostolic experience, the 'stage'. It took us several days to narrate and evaluate together our various experiences, which had taken place in very different situations: in the Sudan, Mali, Tunisia, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Kenya. All of us found we had appreciated this period of 'stage', which we experienced as a time of growth, and a confirmation of our missionary vocation.

Next on our programme was the formulation of our team-project. This involved trying to understand better the mission of the St Anne's Community, of which we are part, and defining the specific aims and practical implications of our small formation group. These we managed to write up in suitable form, to serve as a guideline for the coming weeks, months and years.

Finally, we have just come back from a retreat at Ein Karem, a beautiful
and quiet place in the hills outside Jerusalem. On September 22nd the academic
year will open at the Salesian Theological Institute, where we will be studying.
The daily walk to and from the Institute will keep us fit; it's about 30 minutes
from our house.

Nous sommes arrivés …
Nous voici au début de quelque chose de nouveau: 7 candidats nommés
pour étudier la théologie à Jerusalem. Par une heureuse
coincidence, nous sommes arrivés par le même vol à Tel
Aviv, le 22 Août.
Quelle magnifique surprise de tous nous rencontrer à l'aéroport
d'Addis Abeba et d'embarquer tous ensemble.

Quelle joie quand nous avons pu enfin admirer la Vieille Cité et ses
environs depuis le toit de la maison à Ste Anne, notre nouvelle demeure.
"Ha, nous sommes là, à Jerusalem".

Le
soir suivant, après un agréable jour de repos bien apprécié
, nous avons été officiellement accueillis par la communauté
de Ste Anne. Pol Vonck et Thomas Maier, collaborateurs à la formation,
nous ont souhaité un chaleureux "Welcome".Tous les deux ont
gentiment pris six jours pour nous promener à travers Jerusalem, nous
montrant les églises, les basiliques, le Mur des Lamentations, et le
Mont des Oliviers. Ils nous ont faits passer dans le labyrinte des petites
rues qui conduisent aux marchés, avec ses innombrables vendeurs. Nous
avons decouvert les portes de la Cité et bien d'autres endroits. De
plus ils nous emmenés visiter Bethlehem
Après une semaine d'adaptation à notre nouvel environnement, nous avons eu une session pour partager ce que nous avions vécu pendant le stage. Nous avons eu besoin de plusieurs jours pour raconter et évaluer ensemble nos divers expériences vécues au milieu de situations très différentes : au Sudan, Mali, en Tunisie, au Mozambique, en Ethiopie et au Kenya. Chacun de nous a apprécié ce temps de stage que nous avons vécu comme un temps de croissance et une confirmation de notre vocation missionnaire.

Ensuite dans notre programme , nous avions à 'élaborer notre "Projet d'Equipe". Ceci nous a amené à comprendre davantage la mission de la communauté de Ste Anne dont nous faisons part. Nous avons défini les buts spécifiques et les implications pratiques de notre petit groupe de formation. Nous avons mis tout cela par écrit afin de s'en servir comme ligne de conduite pour les semaines, les mois, les années à venir.

Enfin, nous venons de revenir d'une retraite à Ein Karem, un bel endroit
et qui plus est tranquille sur les hauteurs en dehors de Jerusalem. Le 22
Septembre ce sera l'ouverture officielle au "Salesian Theological Institute",là
où nous étudierons. Le trajet quotidien entre notre maison et
l'Institut est plus ou moins de 30 minutes
