Sur les traces du Père Mapeera Lourdel
et du Frère Amans Delmas

Les catholiques de l’Ouganda célèbrent cette année le 130ème anniversaire de l’arrivée des premiers missionnaires catholiques dans ce pays. Avec eux, suivons les pas du Père Mapeera Lourdel et du Frère Amans Delmas.
Les célébrations ont débuté la semaine du 6 au 14 février par un temps de prière autour des vertus de foi, d’espérance et de charité. Les catholiques ont prié pour la croissance et l’approfondissement en eux de ces trois vertus qui ont aidé les deux missionnaires non seulement à atteindre leur destination, mais aussi à accomplir leur mission avec courage en dépit des nombreuses difficultés rencontrées.
Le 15 février, à Bugoma, dans le diocèse de Masaka, sur les îles Ssese, les catholiques ont approfondi le thème suivant : “Laissons-nous envahir par le Christ et devenons ses témoins où que nous soyons.”
Mapeera et Amans ont quitté Kageye (Tanganyika) pour Buganda le 20 janvier 1879. Avant d’atteindre Buganda, ils se sont arrêtés à un endroit appelé “Bouca” dans le territoire de Muteesa. La tradition orale situe Bugoma comme étant cet endroit.
Le 17 février, c’était le tour de Kigungu, à Entebbe, dans l’archidiocèse de Kampala, de traiter le thème suivant : “Sur les traces du Père Mapeera Lourdel et du Frère Amans Delmas.” En effet, 130 ans plus tôt, jour pour jour, Mapeera et Amans atteignaient Kigungu.
Le 21 mars, à la paroisse du Christ Roi, dans l’archidiocèse de Kampala, les chrétiens débattront du thème « L’Église et le développement: héritage des premiers missionnaires catholiques en Ouganda ».
Le 22 mars, à Kisubi (sous l’Arbre de Mapeera), les catholiques étudieront le thème de la Mission et des vocations à partir du texte de Luc 5,4 : « Jésus dit à Simon: avance en eau profonde et jetez vos filets pour attraper du poisson. »
Ayant quitté Kigungu, les deux missionnaires ont passé la nuit du 19 février à Kisubi à l’endroit marqué aujourd’hui par un gros arbre qu’on suppose avoir poussé à partir d’un des pieux employés pour fixer la tente de Mapeera. Ce pieu est resté planté dans la terre et a pris racine. Cet arbre est maintenant appelé l’Arbre de Mapeera.
Les premiers baptêmes furent administrés à Nabulaga le 27 mars 1880. Le même jour,en 2009, on y traitera du baptême des adultes à partir du texte de Mathieu 5, 14 : « Vous êtes la lumière du monde ».
Le 19 avril, à Kitebi, dans la paroisse de Bunnamwaya, on parlera du dialogue interreligieux, des pèlerinages et des témoignages de la miséricorde et de l’amour de Dieu.
C’est à Kitebi que nos deux missionnaires sont arrivés le 21 février 1879. Ils ont dû attendre deux jours avant d’être reçus par le roi Muteesa 1er. Après cette rencontre, ils sont revenus à Kitebi et y sont restés jusqu’an 7 mars 1879 où ils sont retournés à Lubya, lieu de leur première maison. A Kitebi, ils étaient hébergés par une famille musulmane. Une église catholique est maintenant érigée sur le terrain cédé par cette famille. Nous trouvons aussi près de cet endroit une mosquée qui a été construite avec l’aide de la communauté chrétienne.
A Lubaga, le 24 mai, les catholiques échangeront sur la collaboration entre l’Église et l’État dans le domaine de Justice et Paix.
Le 23 février 1879, le roi Muteesa 1er recevait Mapeera et Amans dans son palais situé sur la colline de Lubaga. C’est là qu’il leur a donné la permission de rester dans son royaume et d’enseigner leur religion. Il leur a aussi donné un terrain à Lubya sur lequel ils ont construit leur première maison. Le 8 décembre 1890, le roi Mwanga donnait les collines de Lubaga en cadeau à Mgr Jean-Joseph Hirth, un des successeurs de Mgr Livinhac.
Le 30 mai, le même thème que celui traité à Lubaga sera étudié au Centre de la jeunesse « Sharing Youth Centre ».
Enfin, le 28 juin, à Nabulagala, on parlera de l’Eucharistie à partir du texte de saint Jean 6, 34 « Je suis le Pain de vie ».
Le 7 mars 1879, Mapeera et Amans entrent dans leur première maison. Le 17 avril de la même année, Amans retourne à Kageye pour servir de guide aux Pères Livinhac, Girault et Barbot. Ils arriveront à Nabulagala dans la nuit du 24 au 25 juin 1879. C’est là qu’ils célèbrent une première messe en Ouganda, le 25 ou 26 juin de cette même année.

In the footsteps of Fr. Mapeera Lourdel and Brother Amans

This year, Catholics in Uganda are celebrating the 130th anniversary of the arrival of the first Catholic missionaries in this country. In company with them, let us follow in the footsteps of Fr Mapeera Lourdel and Brother Amans Delmas.
Mapeera and Amans left Kageye (Tanganyika) for Buganda on the 20th January1879. Before reaching Buganda, they stopped at a place called Bouca in the territory of Muteesa. Oral tradition situates Bugoma as being at this spot.
On the 17th February, it was the turn of Kigungu, Entebbe, in Kampala Archdiocese, to deal with the following topic: ‘In the footsteps of Fr Mapeera Lourdel and Brother Amans Delmas.’ Indeed, 130 years earlier, to the day, Mapeera and Amans reached Kigungu.
On the 21st March, at Christ the King Parish in Kampala Archdiocese, Christians will discuss the topic of ‘Church and development: the lawfulness of the first Catholic missionaries in Uganda.’
Having left Kigungu, the two missionaries spent the night of the 19th February at Kisubi, at the place today marked by a large tree that is supposed to have grown from one of the pegs used to hold down Mapeera’s tent. This peg remained stuck in the soil and took root. This tree is now called the Mapeera Tree.
The first baptisms were performed at Nabulaga on the 27th March 1880. On the same day, adult baptism will be dealt with, based on Matthew 5:14, ‘You are the light of the world.’
Our two missionaries arrived at Kitebi on the 21st February 1879. They had to wait two days before being received by King Muteesa I. After this meeting, they returned to Kitebi and remained there until the 7th March 1879, when they returned to Lubya, to their first house. At Kitebi, they were lodged with a Muslim family. A Catholic church is now built on the land ceded by this family. Near this spot, we also find a mosque that was built with the help of the Christian community. At Lubaga, on the 24th May, Catholics will debate collaboration between the Church and the State in matters of Justice and Peace.
On the 23rd February, King Muteesa I received Mapeera and Amans in his palace on Lubaga Hill. There, he gave them permission to remain in his kingdom and teach their religion. He also gave them a plot at Lubya on which they built their first house. On the 8th December 1890, King Mwanga gave the Lubaga Hills, as a gift to Bishop Jean-Joseph Hirth, one of the successors of Bishop Livinhac.
On the 30th May, the same topic as at Lubaga will be studied at the Sharing Youth Centre.
Finally, on the 28th June, at Nabulagala, discussion will take place on the Eucharist, based on John 6: 34, ‘I am the bread of life.’
On the 7th March 1879, Mapeera and Amans crossed the threshold of their first house. On the 17th April the same year, Amans returned to Kageye to serve as guide to Fathers Livinhac, Girault and Barbot. They would arrive at Nabulagala in the night of the 24-25 June 1879. There, they celebrated the first Mass in Uganda, on the 25th or 26th June of that year.
Let us unite with Ugandan Catholics in these celebrations of the 130th anniversary of the arrival of the first Catholic missionaries in Uganda.
