Les Funérailles du Père Martin Addai M.Afr. Nairobi
Quelques membres de la famille de Martin sont arrivés à Nairobi le jeudi et le vendredi : sa sœur Elizabeth et son oncle maternel James Nkwantabisa, ses cousins Peter, et le Père Paul (CSSp) et M. l'Abbé Francis (Archidiocèse de Westminster, Angleterre.)

Patrick Norah ont représenté la Province Ghana-Nigeria. M. l'Abbé
Francis représentait également le diocèse d'origine de
Martin. Hormis les confrères présents à Nairobi, le Père
Provincial Don Anderson représentait la Province TanKenSud en compagnie
de trois autres confrères, deux étudiants de la Première
Etape à Arusha, Nicholas de Nyakato et deux confrères qui sont
arrivés de Dar es Salaam. Les Smnda présentes à Nairobi
y assistaient aussi. Le Père Provincial de l'Ouganda, Richard Nnyombi
représentait les confrères de l'Ouganda. Durant les jours qui
ont précédé les funérailles, nos étudiants
en compagnie de plusieurs Smnda n'ont pas épargné leur peine
afin de préparer la maison et la liturgie.
Les funérailles du Père Martin ont commencé le vendredi
soir. Une grande foule de personnes (environ 300) - les Mafrs, les Smnda,
la famille de Martin, les abbés ghanéens, les étudiants,
les amis et les voisins - se sont réunis à la maison de formation
à 18h00 et ensemble nous avons fait la courte distance jusqu'à
l'endroit où l'on avait trouvé le corps de Martin le 10 mars.
Sur place, l'oncle de Martin a présidé des prières selon
la coutume traditionnelle Ashanti et a versé une libation. Ensuite
nous avons regagné la maison en procession à la lumière
de bougies. Le Père Fabian, SMA, un ghanéen à Nairobi,
a présidé l'Eucharistie. Le Père Anthony Amissah, SVD,
également du Ghana, a fait l'homélie et a remercié la
famille de Martin de sa présence parmi nous. Il a prié pour
demander la grâce de pardonner aux assassins de Martin. Il a souligné
que Martin représentait une belle fleur que le Seigneur avait cueilli
pour orner son autel. Après l'Eucharistie a eu lieu une veillée
funéraire durant toute la nuit, organisée par la communauté
ghanéenne de Nairobi. Nous avons regardé un montage 'Power Point'
de la vie de Martin ; il y a eu des chants et des hommages rendus de la part
de beaucoup de personnes. Nous avons vu en vidéo une conférence
que Martin avait faite aux chrétiens de la paroisse de Upper Hill,
Nairobi. Le thème en était le Christ, Pain de Vie, en vue du
prochain Synode des Evêques sur l'Afrique. Pendant la conférence,
le Père Martin avait fait mention à plusieurs reprises de l'espoir
de l'Afrique, et combien l'Afrique avance et grandit dans la foi. Les étudiants
ghanéens et l'orchestre du Collège Tangaza ont très bien
animé la veillée qui s'est terminée à 05h00 avec
l'Office des Défunts.
Samedi matin, la Messe des funérailles a été célébrée
à la paroisse de Our Lady Queen of Peace (paroisse animée par
nos confrères.) Mgr Raphael S. Ndingi Mwana'a Nzeki, l'archevêque
de Nairobi a présidé. Mgr Martin, évêque de Machakos
y a assisté en présence de nombreux concélébrants
de beaucoup de Congrégations différentes. Le Nonce apostolique
était présent. L'église, qui est loin d'être petite,
était comble. A la fin de la Messe, des hommages étaient rendus
de la part de la famille de Martin, des étudiants M.Afr., du Provincial
Don Anderson, du Père Tim Redmond, Directeur du Collège Tangaza,
du Père Patrick Divine, Président de l'Association des Supérieurs
Religieux au Kenya, du Nonce apostolique. Les hommages ont tous souligné
les qualités de Martin, son regard bienveillant pour les gens, sa chaleur
personnelle, sa sagesse, son enthousiasme et son zèle - pour n'en citer
que de quelques unes seulement. La présence de tant de personnes à
l'église témoignait que ces hommages n'étaient pas simplement
des paroles vides, mais que bien de personnes ont regretté la mort
de Martin.
Le corps de Martin a été transporté au cimetière
de St Austin, où sont inhumés six de nos confrères. Après
un hommage de la part du Père Francis Bomansaan, ami personnel et Provincial
du Ghana-Nigeria, on a déposé en terre la dépouille mortelle
de Martin. Le rite funèbre s'est conclu par l'invocation du 'Sancta
Maria', chanté par les confrères et les Smnda.
Dimanche après-midi, nous avons célébré une messe d'action de grâces à la maison de formation. Vu le nombre des participants, nous l'avons célébrée à l'extérieur. Il y avait une assistance énorme. Notre confrère le Père Francis Bomansaan a présidé et M. l'Abbé Martin, le cousin de Martin, a assuré l'homélie. Après la communion, les gens se sont unis spontanément dans une danse liturgique. Après la Messe, nous avons partagé ensemble un repas commun, avec la nourriture que les voisins et les Congrégations religieuses avaient apporté.

The funeral of Fr Martin Addai M.Afr. Nairobi
On Thursday and Friday some members of Martin's family arrived in Nairobi
- there was his sister Elizabeth and his maternal uncle James Nkwantabisa,
cousins Peter, Rev. Paul (C.S.Sp), Rev. Francis (Westminster diocese, England).
The confreres of the Ghana and Nigeria province were represented by Francis
Bomansaan and Patrick Norah. Martin's home diocese was repre-sented by his
friend and the Chancellor of his home diocese Rev. Francis. Besides the confrères
working in Nairobi, the TanKenSud Region was represented by Don Anderson,
provincial, three confreres and two students from the first cycle in Arusha,
Nicholas who came from Nyakato and two confreres who came from Dar es Salaam.
The MSOLA working in Nairobi were also pre-sent. Richard Nnyombi represented
the confreres of Uganda. In the days preceding the funeral our students together
with some of the MSOLA had gone to great pains to prepare the house and the
liturgy.
The funeral of Fr Martin started on Friday evening. A large number of people (about 300) - M.Afr, MSOLA, Martin's family, Ghanaian priests and students, friends and neighbours - gathered at our Formation House at 18.00 and we walked the short distance to the place where Mar-tin's body had been found on 10th March. There Martin's uncle presided prayers according to the traditional Ashanti custom - a libation was poured. We then returned to the house in a candle light procession. The Eucharist was presided by Fr Fabian, SMA, one of the Ghanaian priests present in Nairobi. The homilist, Fr. Anthony Amissah (SVD), also from Ghana, thanked the family of Martin for being present among us. He prayed for the grace to forgive the Fr. Martin's murderers. He emphasised that Fr. Martin was a beautiful flower that God had chose to pick in to decorate his altar. After the Eucharist we had a wake - an all-night vigil - organised by the Ghanaian community in Nairobi. We saw a "Power Point" presentation of Martin's life; there were songs and tributes from many people. We watched a video of a conference which martin gave to the Christians of Upper Hill parish in Nairobi. The theme of the talk was Christ the Bread of Life, in preparation for the next African synod. In that video-show, Fr. Martin men-tioned many times the hope of Africa, and how much Africa is moving forward and growing in faith.
The Vigil was indeed animated and organized by the Ghanaian
students of Tangaza College as well as the Tangaza College band. The vigil
ended with the Office of the Dead at 5.00am.
On Saturday morning the funeral Mass was celebrated in the parish
Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace (which is run by our confreres). It was
presided by Archbishop Raphael Ndingi. Bishop Martin of Machakos was among
the numerous concelebrants from many different congregations. The apostolic
nuncio attended. The church (which is not small) was full. At the end of the
Mass there were tributes from Martin's family, the M. Afr. Students, Don Anderson,
the provincial, Fr. Tim Redmond, principal of Tangaza College, Fr. Patrick
Divine, chairman of the Association of the Religious Superiors in Kenya, the
apostolic nuncio. The tributes all mentioned Martin's many qualities - consideration
for people, personal warmth, wisdom, enthusiasm and zeal - to mention but
a few. The presence of so many people in the church served to show that these
tributes were not just empty words - very many people mourn Martin's death.
Martin's body was then brought to St. Austin's cemetery in which
lie the bodies of six of our confreres. After a tribute paid by Francis Bomansaan,
a personal friend and the provincial of Ghana and Nigeria, Martin's body was
laid to rest. The funeral ended with all the confrères and MSOLA singing
the Sancta Maria.
On Sunday afternoon we had a Thanksgiving mass here in the Formation House. Because of numbers Mass was celebrated outside. There was a very good attendance. Our confrere Francis Bomansaan presided and Martin's cousin, Paul, gave the homily. After communion people spontaneously joined in a liturgical dance. After Mass we all shared in a common meal - various neighbours and religious congregations contributed food.
