Ordination of Bruno Ssenyondo
4th February 2006

Our confrere Bruno Ssenyondo was ordained priest in his home parish of Kijjaguzo, on the 4th Feb. 06.

Card Wamala, Mgr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga and Bruno

The main celebrant was the Bishop of the diocese of Kasana-Luwero, Mgr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, assisted by Card. Emmanuel Wamala, Bp. Christopher Kakooza (auxiliary bishop of Kampala Archdiocese), Bp. Mathias Ssekamanya of Lugazi diocese, bishop emeritus of Kabale Mgr Robert Gay, M. Afr.; many diocesan priests and Missionaries of Africa. (NB: All these bishops had known Bruno from his childhood while he was staying with his mother at Nsambya Parish - Kampala - as refugees after the assassination of his father in 1982. Bruno was by then 7 years old.)

The celebration, which took place outside the parish church, was very colourful and prayerful thanks to the melodious songs sang by the parish choir of Kijjaguzo.

Bruno is the second missionary of Africa from this parish after Fr. Joseph Kamya who made his missionary oath in 1965. This parish was founded by the Missionaries of Africa in 1937, at the occasion of the priestly Silver Jubilee of Bishop Edouard Michaud (1884-1945), hence the name Kijjaguzo meaning jubilee in luganda language. Presently, there are no missionaries of Africa in this diocese after having handed over all the parishes they had to the diocesan priests.

For his ordination motto, Bruno chose the words of Cardinal Lavigérie: Be Apostles, nothing but Apostles. He has been appointed to Mali where he did his stage in 2000-2002.

Promotion of Interreligious Dialogue among the believers of different religions is an important aspect of evangelization in this country: 70% Muslims, Traditional Religion 28% and Christians 2%.
