Voici des extraits du livret conjointement préparé et publié par le Conseil pontifical pour la promotion de l'unité des chrétiens(CPPUC, Église catholique) et la Commission Foi et Constitution (CFC, Conseil œcuménique des Églises). Nous avons la joie de vous annoncer la naissance d'une nouvelle ère de collaboration entre le CPPUC et la CFC.Une nouvelle étape vient en effet d'être franchie en direction de l'unité des chrétiens. Cette année, pour la première fois, le texte pour la Semaine de prière pour l'unité des chrétiens qui vous a été remis n'a pas seulement été préparé en commun par le CPPUC et la CFC mais est aussi conjointement publié par ces deux organismes. Nous vous encourageons à faire bon usage de ce texte, naturellement pendant une semaine particulière au cours de l'année mais aussi comme base de votre prière personnelle et de prières publiques pour l'unité tout au long de l'année.
Rechercher l'unité durant toute l'année
Traditionnellement, la Semaine de prière pour l'unité des chrétiens est célébrée du 18 au 25 janvier. Ces dates furent proposées en 1908 par Paul Wattson de manière à couvrir la période entre la fête de saint Pierre et celle de saint Paul. Ce choix a donc une signification symbolique. Dans l'hémisphère Sud, où le mois de janvier est une période de vacances d'été, on préfère adopter une autre date, par exemple aux environs de la Pentecôte (ce qui fut suggéré par le mouvement Foi et Constitution en 1926) qui représente aussi une autre date symbolique pour l'unité de l'Église.
En gardant cette flexibilité à l'esprit, nous vous encourageons à considérer ces textes comme une invitation à trouver d'autres occasions, au cours de l'année, pour exprimer le degré de communion que les Églises ont déjà atteint et pour prier ensemble en vue de parvenir à la pleine unité voulue par le Christ.
Les frères apôtres se donnent le baiser de paix. Pierre est le patron de Rome, André celui de Constantinople. Cette icône fut offerte par le patriarche Athénagoras au pape Paul VI quand ils se rencontrèrent à Jérusalem en 1964. Après tant des siècles de querelles entre les Églises, eux aussi firent le geste de la paix. Cette icône symbolise depuis la recherche d’unité entre les Églises malgré les obstacles qui demeurent sur le chemin de la communion totale, jusqu’à la table de l’Eucharistie.Adapter les textes
Chaque fois que cela sera possible, on essayera d'adapter les textes aux réalités des différents lieux et pays. Ce faisant, on devra tenir compte des pratiques liturgiques et dévotionnelles locales ainsi que du contexte socio-culturel. Les églises et communautés chrétiennes qui célèbrent la Semaine de prière pour l'unité des chrétiens chaque jour de la semaine, peuvent trouver des suggestions dans les textes proposés pour les Huit Jours.
Pour les personnes qui souhaitent prier en privé, les textes contenus dans cette brochure peuvent alimenter leurs prières et leur rappeler aussi qu'elles sont en communion avec tous ceux qui prient à travers le monde pour une plus grande unité visible de l'Église du Christ.Le Christ, unique fondement de l'Église (1 Co 3, 1-23)
Pour préparer le thème de la Semaine de prière pour l'unité de cette année, un groupe venant de différentes Églises de Slovaquie a réfléchi sur les questions suivantes :
1.Quel est le fondement sur lequel se construit la nouvelle " existence " de leurs Églises ? 2. Existe-t-il un espace de croissance dans l'unité dans le processus de croissance des communautés confessionnelles respectives ?
3. Quels sont les moyens pour renforcer le service de l'Église ?
On trouve dans le Nouveau Testament des épîtres adressées aux Églises pour les encourager dans leur croissance spirituelle car elles vivaient dans un monde souvent hostile aux valeurs de l'Évangile. Parmi elles, la première épître aux chrétiens de Corinthe est le texte sur lequel s'est basé le travail du groupe préparatoire.

et prières pour les huit jours1er Jour : Appelés à la maturité spirituelle (1 Co 3, 1-4)
Os 2, 21-25 : Je dirai à Lo-Ammi : 'Tu es mon peuple' ; Ps 24 : Qui montera la montagne du Seigneur ; Col 1, 25-28 : Le mystère tenu caché tout au long des âges ; Jn 15, 1-8 : Je suis la vigne, vous êtes les sarments.
Prière : Dieu de miséricorde, tu nous appelles constamment à une plus grande maturité spirituelle. Tu veux que nous t'appartenions. Ouvre nos cœurs et nos esprits à la grandeur de ton appel et aide-nous à persévérer sur le chemin de l'unité - en communion avec Paul, Apollos et Céphas - en proclamant et en nous engageant au service de ton œuvre rédemptrice dans le monde. Amen.2e Jour : Dieu donne la croissance (1 Co 3, 5-9)
Gn 1, 26-2,9 Le Seigneur Dieu planta un jardin en Eden ; Ps 104 (103), 24-31 Tu renouvelles la surface du sol ; Rm 8, 14-25 La création attend avec impatience la révélation des fils de Dieu ; Lc 8, 4-15 Ce sont ceux qui entendent la parole et portent du fruit.
Prière : O Dieu ! Nous te remercions pour la confiance et la bénédiction que tu accordes à ceux qui travaillent à l'avènement de ton Règne dans ce monde. Aide-nous à découvrir de nouvelles possibilités de manifester ton action au service de ceux qui nous entourent ; que nous servions, plutôt que de chercher à être servis. Tiens-nous unis comme une seule famille de ton Fils unique, fais que nous soyons des économes fidèles de ta création afin que, par les hommes et les femmes, les petits et les grands, les choses et les gens, tu sois reconnu comme sauveur et créateur de tout. Amen.3e Jour : Christ est le fondement (1 Co 3, 10-11)
Es 28, 14-16 : Je pose une pierre à toute époque, une pierre angulaire, établie pour servir de fondation ; Ps 118 (117), 16-24 : La pierre rejetée est devenue la pierre angulaire ; Ep 2, 19-22 : Jésus-Christ comme pierre maîtresse ; Mt 7, 24-27 : La maison bâtie sur le roc ne s'écroulera pas.
Prière : Seigneur notre Dieu, à travers l'œuvre du Saint-Esprit tu as établi dans le Christ le seul fondement sur lequel l'Église est bâtie. Nous te remercions de ce que tu as fait pour nous dans le Christ. Nous te remercions également de soutenir continuellement l'Église. Aide-nous par ta grâce à construire sur le fondement que tu a posé en Christ notre Seigneur. Amen.4e Jour : Que l'on bâtisse sur ce fondement (1 Co 3, 12-13)
Ne 2, 17-18 Allons rebâtir la muraille de Jérusalem ; Ps 127 (126) Si le Seigneur ne bâtit la maison, ses bâtisseurs travaillent pour rien ; 1 Co 12, 4-11 Il y a diversité de dons, mais c'est le même Esprit ; Mt 20, 1-16 Un maître de maison sortit de grand matin, afin d'embaucher des ouvriers pour sa vigne.
Prière : Seigneur, nous te rendons grâces pour le don unique de vie et de paix que tu nous a fait à travers ton fils Jésus-Christ. Nos Églises ont reçu de toi des dons divers. Aide-nous à voir cette diversité comme un enrichissement qui nous permet de bâtir ta maison dans le monde. Aide-nous à porter ton amour aux hommes et aux femmes parmi lesquels nous vivons. Amen.5e Jour : Dieu juge nos efforts de bâtisseurs (1 Co 3, 13-15)
Gn 4, 2 Suis-je le gardien de mon frère ; Ps 51 (50), 1-4, 9-13 Contre toi, et toi seul, j'ai péché ; Ph 2, 1-5 Considérez les autres comme supérieurs à vous ; Mt 25, 14-30 Un homme confia ses biens à ses serviteurs.
Prière : Seigneur, en venant à nous par ton Fils Jésus et en te manifestant à travers des personnes faillibles, tu t'es montré à nos yeux comme un Dieu vulnérable. Nous te rendons grâce pour la confiance que tu a placée dans le service et le travail que nous accomplissons pour bâtir ton royaume. Fais que nous restions attentifs à ta volonté et à ton dessein et éclaire-nous afin que nous puissions voir les besoins véritables des personnes autour de nous. Fais que nous soyons capables d'apprendre les uns des autres afin d'être unis dans notre responsabilité mutuelle. Par Jésus Christ, notre Seigneur. Amen.6e Jour : Vous êtes le temple de Dieu (1 Co 3, 16-17)
Gn 1, 26-27 : Créé à son image ; Ps 8 : Qu'est donc l'homme ; 1 P 2, 9-10 : Le peuple de Dieu ; Mt 16, 24-27 : Si quelqu'un vient à ma suite.
Prière : Dieu éternel, tu as créé le ciel et la terre, tu a créé l'être humain à ton image en donnant à chacun de nous une identité et une dignité propres. Nous te rendons grâce pour le don de vie. Aide-nous, en tant que chrétiens et en tant qu'Églises, à recevoir ce don dans toute sa plénitude afin que nous puissions surmonter tout ce qui entrave ou réduit ton don de vie. Comble-nous de ton Esprit de bonté afin que nous puissions croître dans le Christ et devenir son image dans le monde. Amen.7e jour : Folie et sagesse : la vie en Christ (1 Co 3, 18-20)
Jb 32, 7- 33: 6 : Le souffle, l'inspiration du Puissant, rend intelligent ; Ps 14 (13), 1-7 : Le Seigneur s'est penché pour voir s'il en est un de nous qui cherche Dieu ; 1 Co 1, 17-30 : Ce qui est folie dans le monde pour confondre les sages ; Mt 10, 17-25 : C'est l'Esprit de votre Père qui parlera en vous.
Prière : Dieu, tu nous as fait connaître la folie de ton amour quand les humains ont crucifié Jésus ton fils, ton unique, et quand tu l'as ressuscité comme Christ, nous avons reconnu ton immense sagesse. Nous t'en prions : maintiens-nous à la suite de ton Fils sur l'étroit chemin de vie. Donne-nous de proclamer la bonne nouvelle du salut par la croix de Jésus-Christ, témoin de la vie pour tous. Que ton Église lui demeure fidèle et qu'elle ouvre toutes les nations à la sagesse de ton Esprit. Amen.8e Jour : Vous êtes à Christ (1 Co 3, 21-23)
Es 44, 1-8 : C'est moi le premier, le dernier ; Ps 89 (88), 1-4 Ta bonté est établie pour toujours ; Ap 4, 1-11 : Ils adoraient le Vivant ; Mc 9, 33-35 : Si quelqu'un veut être le premier, qu'il soit le dernier de tous.
Prière : Seigneur, Dieu de bonté, nous te rendons grâces pour nous avoir fait un en Christ. Renforce notre imagination et notre courage pour que nous puissions bâtir ensemble ton Église dans l'unité et dans l'amour. Fais que nos vies et la vie de nos Églises soient un témoignage de ton amour pour nous et pour la création tout entière. Seigneur, accorde-nous dès maintenant l'unité. Amen.

It is a joy for us to announce both the birth of a new era of collaboration between the Pontifical Council (Catholic Church) and Faith and Order (World Council of Churches) and a further, small step in the direction of Christian unity. This year, for the first time, the text for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity that you have in your hands has not only been jointly prepared by the PCPCU and Faith and Order but is being jointly published by them. Although this has been the de facto case for some years we have also now adopted a common format. We urge you to make good use of the text - not only during one particular week in the year but as a basis for both your private and public prayers for unity throughout the year.
The search for unity: throughout the year
The traditional date for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is 18-25 January. Those dates were proposed in 1908 by Paul Wattson to cover the days between the feast of St Peter and the feast of St Paul, and therefore have a symbolic meaning. In the southern hemisphere where January is a vacation time, churches often find other days to celebrate the week of prayer, for example around Pentecost (which was suggested by the Faith and Order movement in 1926), which is also a symbolic date for the unity of the church.
Mindful of this flexibility concerning the date, we encourage you to understand the material presented here as an invitation to find opportunities throughout the whole year to express the degree of communion which the churches have already received, and together to pray for that full unity which is Christ's will.
Here the brother apostles Peter and Andrew embrace. Peter, the patron of the Church of Rome; Andrew, the patron of the Church of Constantinople. This icon was presented by Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras to Pope Paul VI when, after so many centuries of estrangement, they met in Jerusalem in 1964 and exchanged the Kiss of Peace. This icon symbolizes the essential unity still of the great Churches of apostolic origin, especially the Orthodox and Catholic Churches (despite the obstacles still remaining to full Eucharistic communion).
Adapting the text
This material is offered with the understanding that, whenever possible, it will be adapted for use at the local level. In doing this, account must be taken of local liturgical and devotional practice, and of the whole social and cultural context. Such adaptation should normally take place ecumenically. In some places ecumenical structures are already set up for adapting the material. In other places, we hope that the need to adapt it will be a stimulus to creating such structures.Using the material
Communities which observe the week of prayer in their worship for each day during the week may draw material for these services from the "eight days".Those who wish to pray privately may find the material helpful for their prayer intentions. They can be mindful that they are in communion with others praying all around the world for the greater visible unity of Christ's church.
Christ, the one Foundation of the Church (1 Cor 3:1-23)
In the process of preparing the theme for this year's Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the preparatory group made of representatives of Churches in Slovakia reflected on the following questions:
1. What is the foundation on which the new "existence" of their Churches is being built?
2. Is there a space to grow in unity as the respective confessional communities grow?
3. What are the means for strengthening the service of the Church?
The New Testament preserves letters written to the churches as encouragement for their spiritual growth since they lived in a world often hostile to the values of the gospel. One of these is the first letter to the Christians of Corinth from which the members of the preparatory group drew their guidance.

Biblical Reflections and Prayers for the Eight Days
Day 1: Called to spiritual maturity (1 Cor 3: 1-4)
Hos 2:21-23: I will say to Lo-ammi (not my people) 'you are my people'. Ps 24: Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? Col 1:25-28: The mystery hidden throughout the ages; Jn 15:1-8: I am the vine, you are the branches.
Prayer : Gracious God, you continue to call us to spiritual maturity. You desire to name us as your own. Open our hearts and minds to the greatness of our calling, and help us to walk in unity - in communion with Paul and Apollos and Cephas - as we proclaim and place ourselves at the service of your redeeming work in the world. Amen.Day 2: God is in charge of growth (1 Cor 3: 5-9)
Gen 1: 26 - 2: 9: The Lord God planted a garden in Eden. Ps 104: 24-31 : You renew the surface of the earth. Rom 8: 14-25 : Creation awaits with impatience the revelation of the Son of God. Lk 8: 4-15: It is those who hear the word …and bear fruit.
Prayer : O God, We thank you for the confidence and blessing which you offer to those who work for the coming of your reign in this world. Help us to find new ways of carrying out your work in the service of those around us. May we serve, rather than seek to be served, and may your healing power be at work among us. United as one family of your only Son, may we be faithful stewards of your creation so that you may be known by all men and women, great and small, by all things and all people, as the true living saviour and creator of all. Amen.
Day 3 : Christ is the foundation (1 Cor 3: 10-11)
Is 28: 14-16: I am laying a foundation stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation. Ps 118: 16-24: The stone rejected has become the cornerstone.Eph 2: 19-22: Christ Jesus as the cornerstone. Mt 7: 24-27: A house built on rock will not fall.
Prayer : Lord our God, through the work of the Holy Spirit you have established in Christ the one foundation on which your church is built. We thank you for what you have done for us in Christ. We thank you too for continually upholding your church in the midst of all attempts to destroy it. Help us by your grace that we may build on the foundation you have laid down in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
Day 4 : You are to build on the foundation (1 Cor 3: 12-13)
Neh 2: 17-18: Come let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. Ps 127: Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. 1 Cor 12: 4-11: There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. Mt 20: 1-16: A landowner went out to hire labourers to work in his vineyard.
Prayer : God, we thank you for your unique gift of life and peace in Christ. You have given our churches many different gifts. Help us to see this diversity as an enrichment to building your house in this world. Let us witness to what strengthens our unity, and encourage all that helps us to bring your love to the people with whom we are living. Amen.Day 5 : God judges our efforts to build (1 Cor 3: 13-15)

Prayer: God, through your coming to us in Jesus and through using fallible people, you have shown yourself to be a vulnerable God; we thank you that you still trust us to offer service and work for the building of your kingdom. Keep us alert to your will and purpose and open our eyes that we may see the true needs of people around us. Enable us in humility to learn from one another, that we may be united in our mutual accountability and devoted in service for your kingdom; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.Day 6 : You are God's temple (1 Cor 3: 16-17)
Gen 1: 26-27: God created humankind in his image. Ps 8: What are human beings? 1 Pet 2: 9-10 God's own people. Mt 16: 24-27 If any want to become my followers.
Prayer : Eternal God, you created heaven and earth, you created human beings in your image, giving each of us identity and dignity. We thank you for your gift of life - life which binds us to you and to your creation. Help us - as Christians and as churches - to receive your gift in all its fullness so that we may be able to overcome whatever limits or reduces your gift of life. Fill us with your good Spirit so that we may grow into the image of Christ and become his image in the world. Amen.Day 7 : Folly and wisdom, life in Christ (1 Cor 3 : 18-20)
Job 32: 7 - 33: It is the breath of the Almighty that makes for understanding. Ps 14: 1-7: The Lord looks down to see if there are any who seek after God. 1 Cor 1: 17-30: God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise. Mt 10: 17-25: It is the Spirit of your Father who will speak through you.
Prayer : O God, full of wisdom and truth, you made known to us the folly of your love when humanity crucified your only son, Jesus, and when you raised him from the dead as the Christ, we began to grasp your great wisdom. We pray you, keep us in the steps of your Son on the narrow road to Life. May we proclaim the good news of salvation by the cross of Jesus Christ which witnessed to life for all. May your church today stay faithful to him who is its foundation and may it lead all nations to the wisdom of your Spirit. Amen.Day 8: You are Christ's (1 Cor 3: 21-23)
Is 44: 1-8: I am the first and I am the last. Ps 89: 1-4: Your steadfast love is established forever. Rev 4: 1-11: Worshipping the one who lives forever and ever. Mk 9: 33-35: Whoever wants to be first must be last.
Prayer: Loving God, we thank you for making us one in Christ. Give us imagination and courage to build your church together in unity and in love. Make our lives, and the lives of our churches, a witness to your love for us and for the whole creation. Grant us unity in our time, O Lord. Amen!
