Death of Fr. Joseph Stumpf

Dear Confreres, dear Friends,

This morning we received the sad news that our confrere Fr. Joseph Stumpf passed away in the hospital at Johannesburg.

Joseph had suffered a stroke in Nondo (Kasama) on 2nd July, and we flew him to Lusaka on 4th July. Since his condition did not improve, we decided to send Joseph to South Africa. He was in good hands in Jo/burg, but deteriorated more and more and finally passed away just after midnight on 19th July.
He will be buried in South Africa on Thursday, 24th August 2006.

Joe, as everyone called him, came to Zambia in December 1962 and after his language course was appointed to Lubushi Parish. He worked in eight different missions of Kasama Archdiocese, and was shifted from one place to another quite often. He returned to Lubushi three times. He was such a kind and good person that he could be sent anywhere where there was a need. People and the confreres liked him very much.

After a sabbatical and home leave in 1999, Joe came to Nondo in 2000 and remained there until he suffered a stroke on 2nd July. He was supposed to transmit Nondo to the diocesan clery on 30th July and go on home leave in August. God had other plans.

The community of Kasama will organize a funeral Mass at Nondo in the coming weeks, and the Archbishop James Spaita will be present.

Our condolences go to his relatives in Germany and to all his friends at home or in Zambia. The last sentence he said, when we loaded him into the ambulance taking him to Lusaka Airport was: "I will be back soon". His wish was to return to Zambia, but God's plan was different. We all pray for him, as he does for us in heaven.

Gotthard Rosner, M.Afr.
Provincial of Zambia
